Okay, so I’ll preface this post by saying that this post is about a guy who dresses up like Grimlock from Transformers and gives advice on startups. Now that we have that out of the way, I’ll you about more about him (in a bullet point fashion).

  1. Nobody knows who he is
  2. He draws pictures and sells posters
  3. He has made himself into a startup meme
  4. HE HAS MADE CAPS LOCK ACCEPTABLE
  5. He has worked with Eric Ries
  6. His advice is actually pretty damned good.

I came across him a few months ago while in the hunt for lean startup material and was immediately jealous that he had an alter ego and I didn’t (unless he really IS a metal dinosaur). But the more I dug around, the more I realised how hard it must be to keep his momentum without jumping out behind that head and screaming “IT ME. I AM SMARTEST”. I mean, I can barely come up with good advice at the best of times, let alone as myself AND a witty dinosaur.

I know he advises startups and I can’t help but wonder if a small community somewhere knows who he is and as a result his career has benefited (this is me talking myself into wearing a costume for the foreseeable future)?

And I’m also wondering if he would’ve been as successful if he wasn’t in that head, and didn’t spawn the age of the startup dinosaur? After all, before him, the startup scene really didn’t have a mascot – not that looking back it would’ve asked for a wry impermeable children’s cartoon, but when said like that… it’s actually really fitting if you’ve spent any amount of time in the startup scene.

Anyway, follow @FAKEGRIMLOCK, he’s got a good head on his shoulders ←see what I did there ^_^

EDIT:

I’m going to add to the list above this bullet point:

  • He affects change.

Indeed, he made me change my commenting system. Rock on Dinosaurous.
